To find out if the Samsung BD-D5700 delivered a credible 2D performance, we used one of the latest animated films How to Train Your Dragon released on blu-ray.
First up, load time was reasonably fast, but not as fast as the latest Sony players. Colors were nothing short of spectacular. The dynamic and vibrant shades of the dragons, together with the picturesque landscapes shone through vividly. Fine detail was intricately and superbly rendered, from the tiny scales that make up the dragon’s body right down to the slightest indication of rust on a shield. Blacks and especially the shadow quality were also immaculate. Even in the darkest scenes, the texture and colors were highly distinguishable.
In the audio department, the BD-D5700’s decoding of the DTS-HD MA 5.1 was a fitting complement to its impressive video performance. The movie’s demanding sound effects gave a thorough workout for the D5700. Battle scenes brought out the best in the roaring bass when the dragons breathed out fire through its mouth. Subtler sounds such as the blowing wind and the twitter of birds rounded up an immersive audio performance. Finally, dialog was crisp and clear without being suppressed by the booming action packed sequences.
Hooking the player to the wireless network is a breeze. YouTube and Netflix video streaming worked flawlessly after updating the firmware.
Although being one of Samsung’s affordable models, the Samsung BD-D5700 still packs a punch with solid image quality and latest technologies. It is hassle-free and easy to set up. Despite the lack of 3D features, it delivers splendid performances with music and blu-ray movies.
